An Ounce of Prevention

There has been a lot of talk about health coverage in the media lately. When we talk about healthcare we think of the medical system we use when we are sick.  I think this is misleading.  In reality, if we want true Healthcare we need to think in terms of prevention.  If we go through life out of balance, the natural conclusion is illness, not health.

The irony is that we all know what we need in order to be healthy and in balance but we seldom make the time.  Exercise, whole foods, fresh water and sleep are the four things that create health and balance naturally.

So, the question becomes why do we ignore these simple and accessible solutions?  The cost of each of them, in many cases, is only time and effort.  In our culture, I believe, that is the key issue.  While it should be a

Weight Loss Mistake #4: Cravings

sweet cravings

Any one who has ever tried to lose weight by dieting has come up against cravings.  Often times we are told to just not eat the food our body is demanding.  The problem with this thinking is, in reality, cravings are brilliant signals from our body.

This perception that cravings are a failure to stick to our diets is inaccurate.  We think, “If only we had the willpower to overcome our weakness we could be thin.” When we look at what cravings do for our body, we realize they are our body’s means of telling us what it needs.  When we understand what these signals are for, we are able to make choices that support our health and weight loss.

What are Cravings…Really?

You might be wondering about now, how cravings could be signals from our body.  Think of it this way.  Our body has certain needs and tries to get

Are affirmations working for you?

Affirmations are the big thing being promoted to help change your thinking about anxious topics. Affirmations are tools we can use to help change beliefs that don’t serve our higher good.  For example, if you are having difficulty with your weight loss, you would use affirmations to help train your mind that change is possible and you are thin.

I have been working with affirmations on and off for many years with varying success.  Not long ago I discovered a great new tool I want to share with you. They are called Afformations.  Created by Noah St. John, afformations turn the idea of affirmations around to help the brain engage in the changes you are trying to make.  As I understand the story, he was working with affirmations and, like I found, there was a part of his mind that would reject the repeated statements as not quite true. One day,

Green Wines Are All The Rage

wine

Wine is one of my favorite treats.  More and more we are hearing about the health benefits of wine.  The recent rise in organic and sustainable farming on wineries is very encouraging to me.  Traditional wineries use intensive farming methods to ensure a good crop.  We are seeing more evidence that biodynamic, sustainable, and organic practices are creating a higher quality wine as well as better long-term, growing conditions for the wineries.

Here is a great graphic on how the wine industry is moving towards sustainable practices. Check with your local wine purveyor for some green wines available in your area.

Crowding out foods

Foods in balance

The first thing people do when they decide they need to go on a diet is start to think of all the foods they can’t eat anymore.  We usually form it in our minds like that, too.  “This food has to go forever.  I better get as much as I can right now.”

We believe that the food is the sole cause of all this weight.  “If only I could stop eating xyz, I could lose weight.”

It is not long before a deprivation mindset begins.  We start to think of all the things we can’t have, aren’t good for us, “oh, yeah.  I ate a bag of those yesterday.”  In reality, any expert in food or nutrition is going to tell you that you can eat what you want, you just have to use moderation.

We, as American’s, aren’t so good with this concept of moderation.  We want it all,

Effective Vegetables for Candida Diet

Vegetables for treating Candida albicans

As any doctor would suggest eating plenty of fresh vegetables is the penchant to stay healthy. If you are thinking of a diet plan it should definitely include eating a whole lot of vegetables. When you are suffering from Candida some of your near and dear ones would suggest vegetables as remedy to quick relief. But do all vegetables help cure Candida? Any expert would suggest there is a lot of stress given as a part of Candida diet upon which vegetables should be eaten for quick recovery. To understand which vegetables you should consume, first of all goal of the Candida diet must be made clear.

Candida diet is a special course of dietary action taken to improve the health condition of individuals suffering from Candidiasis. Candida in plain and simple terms is caused by a microorganism known as Candida albicans, which develops within the intestinal tract of the host.

Fit Moms for Life

A New Year A New Me event is going fantastic.  I’m so excited to introduce you to our final sponsor spotlight for this event.

Dustin Maher is a nationally renowned personal trainer who has helped hundreds of moms to get and stay fit.  He has been on television over 200 times talking about his work to make moms look and feel great.  His book, Fit Moms for Life: How to Have Endless Energy to Outplay Your Kids, is a wonderful resource for anyone looking to change how they feel in their body.

This book is refreshing in it’s approach.  I have read dozens of diet/exercise books in my career as a health enthusiast.  I’ve probably tried as many methodologies.

Maher’s approach to food is well-balanced.  He advocates a low-crap diet, by removing the processed, chemically laden foods from the diet. I love that he doesn’t insist people avoid whole categories of macronutrients

Hint Water

First, I have to say I am so excited about this giveaway event.  A New Year, A New Me was conceived to promote health and wellness in the new year.  Ok, now on to the first sponsor spotlight.

Water is one of the most important tools for any attempts to create a healthier lifestyle.  Besides being essential for the body to work properly, it creates suppleness and flexibility within the body.  It also makes your skin look amazing.

One of the things I hear most often from clients is that water is too boring.  They don’t like the lack of flavor.  We live in a culture that likes big flavor and foods that excite.  Until now I have been telling people to add fresh juice to their water, like lemon, lime or orange.  It isn’t ideal but I will do whatever it takes to get my clients to drink
