Purification Diet Wrap Up

Woman Getting a Massage

I finished my purification diet while trying to keep warm during the freak snow storm in New England over the weekend.  The power outages delayed my posting but we are back in the heat and all is good.

I had to complete the detoxification a day early because we couldn’t open the fridge but I found it really easy to get back on track once we got into the refrigerator. (Luckily root vegetables don’t go bad very quickly.) I have to use a different belt hole because my pants are getting bigger.  I’m not focusing on my weight because it’s not the measure of health I use. I’m more interested in feeling better and getting fit.  My skin feels great from all the spa treatments I indulged in.

I am so glad I took the time to detoxify my body and purify my food choices.  My creativity in the kitchen is

Purification Diet — Day 5

Grains

I am feeling so much better since I added whole cooked grains to my purification regimen.  It’s a true testament to the power of complex carbohydrates to improve how we feel.  My food feels more palatable and well-rounded.  I am still able to put an emphasis on whole fruits and vegetables while keeping my mood and energy at a good place.

Breakfast: Apples and green tea

Snack: Miso with Congee and cooked Kale, Cider Vinegar with Water and a little bit of raw honey

Purification Diet — Day 4

Today was a very cold and tired day.  I started with a traditional Chinese healing food called Congee.  It’s basically rice slow cooked over night.  It was a great treat this morning.  I also added some roasted vegetables for the warming factor.  I really needed to warm myself and get some comfort food.  I felt much better today than yesterday.

Menu

Breakfast:  Congee with Miso

Snack: Apples and Plums

Lunch: Miso soup with Vegetables

Dinner: Roasted Parsnips, Carrots, Potatoes, Onions and Garlic

Purification Diet — Day 3

Broccoli Romanesco Salad

Today has been the hardest day so far.  I’m tired and have had a mild headache all day.  I take that as a sign things are working.  I’ve been eating all day but still feel unsatisfied.  I added baked sweet potatoes because I am feeling like I need more substance to my food.

Then I remembered about Congee and turned to one of my favorite books on health, Healing with Whole Foods by Paul Pitchford.  This book takes much of it’s theory from Chinese medicine which I draw a good bit of my health and wellness knowledge from.  I’m going to work on a post about Congee, its benefits and how to make it. Until then here is my menu and details from my day.

Menu

Breakfast: Dandelion Flower Tea and Smoothie with Apple, Goji Berries, Kale, Oatstraw and Chia Seeds

What is #Detoxification?

Making a Smoothie

The definition of detoxification is to remove a harmful substance (as a poison or toxin). The human body has several mechanisms in place to perform detoxification processes on a daily basis. When the body is bombarded with highly processed foods and daily exposure to various chemicals, our bodies deal with toxins by eliminating what it can and storing the rest into fat cells.

In people with a strong immune system and relatively clean eating habits, this doesn’t pose a concern. If there is chronic overeating, heavy reliance on meat,

dairy processed foods and little exercise there is a build up within the body that leads to cravings, sluggishness, low energy, overweight and ultimately disease.

The best way to eliminate toxins built up in the body and restore vital energy is to give the body a break from the constant onslaught of toxins and overconsumption. There are several different forms

Purification Diet — Day 2

Salad Greens

Today is officially my second day on the purification diet.  I can honestly say I feel lighter.  My energy is up and I slept well last night.  My head hurts a little but that could be because I am missing my morning caffeine.  I am a little hungry.  Luckily I can eat all the fruit and veggies I like.  So here is what today will look like on my purification diet.

Menu for today

Breakfast: Smoothie with Banana, Apple, Goji Berries, Kale and Chia Seeds

Snack: Apples and Kiwi

Lunch: Miso soup with Carrots, Cabbage and Parsnips

Dinner: Nishime — Japanese cooked vegetable dish

Vegetables are Life

Anyone with children knows how hard the early days are.  Babies, while needing many hours of sleep a day, don’t feel the need to make those hours consecutive.  As a nursing mom I was always the one getting up with every feeding and late night waking.  Multiply that by two and it makes ideal conditions for sleep deprivation. Since I stopped sleeping through the night around the beginning of the third trimester I figure I didn’t get more than 4 consecutive hours of sleep for about 3 years.

During that time I wasn’t taking the best care of myself.  I made sure I got the basic nutrients but moved through my days in a foggy haze.  4 years later I realize I am 4 sizes bigger than I started.  Not my finest hour.  Last spring, as my energy was picking up and I was feeling more like a woman and less

Chia seeds aid weight loss

Chia seeds for health

Chia seeds for health

One of my current goals is to lose the weight I gained since 2003 after two pregnancies, a motor vehicle accident and the ups and downs of life.  All told 48 pounds.  I don’t come from naturally skinny people.  My mom and her sisters are on perpetual diets.  (I speak of my matrilineal side because my father was adopted and his family genetics are not available to me.)  In any event, while living my life I gained 48 pounds and I want them gone.

So I have been changing my diet and hitting the gym pretty regularly.  I have made one major addition that has been great for making all of this come together.  Chia seeds are my new favorite food.

Chia seeds were a major component of Aztec and Mayan life for centuries.  They are considered the food of the warrior because of their nutrient

Dandelion Root Vinegar

Dandy Root Vinegar

Dandelion (aka dandy) vinegar is my favorite vinegar to make.  Dandelion root is a supreme liver tonic.  It acts to alkalize the body and nourish the blood.  When combined with vinegar which has a neutral pH it is a great tonic for the blood as well.  A diet heavy with meat, carbohydrates, sugar, processed foods and fat will create an acidic environment within the body which is a prime environment for inflammation, bacteria and cancer cells to thrive in.  The more alkaline you make your diet the harder it is for disease to thrive in the body.  Regular servings of dandelion vinegar in your diet will promote health on a fundamental level for your body.  Here is a great way to get the benefits from dandelion year round.

Dandy vinegar has been a staple in our pantry for many years.  Recently I realized we were out of my favorite salad treat.
