Miso Sip great start to the day

Cup of miso sip

Miso is one of my favorite foods.  As we come in to the cooler weather of autumn I find myself enjoying miso soup for breakfast in the morning.  It has this way of warming me from the inside.  I drink tea every morning but it doesn’t go down like the richness of a cup of miso soup.  Being a fermented food, miso has live cultures to help support the digestive flora. Definitely one of the unsung superfoods available.

At Expo East 2011 I found a traditional old favorite of mine marketing in a corner.  Miso Master Organic miso was the first miso I came across many years ago.  It sat in my fridge so long I tossed it in a move.  Of course it was not to long after it was landfill before I learned miso keeps in the fridge indefinitely. Miso Master is the leading producer of traditional Japanese-style

What is Health Coaching?

Improving one’s health is complex. Many years of experiences and habitual behaviors cause imbalances in our lives. Therefore, to establish new behaviors that will recreate the balance we are born with, a comprehensive approach is necessary.

Health Coaching is based on understanding how all aspects of life impact health. Good health goes beyond diet and exercise. It encompasses a satisfying career, loving relationships, and a natural sense of joy. Customized health programs take clients through a total mind-body healing process, while uncovering the root causes of illness or decreased wellness. A strong emphasis is placed on understanding how the body functions, what it is telling us and recognize that one person’s nourishment is another person’s “poison.” The ultimate goal is to create sustainable, reliable balance through lasting lifestyle changes.

As a client of my health coaching program, you will…

set and accomplish goals in a way that is empowering and exciting

Reducing chronic illness during the cold and flu season

The Story of Louis Pasteur

My son’s favorite book is a story of Louis Pasteur. It was an accident really. His sister loves books. She tends to feel every book she sees is her special book.

The Story of Louis Pasteur

One night in the midst of another battle of the favorite book, I grabbed the nearest one at hand and told my despondent child that it was his special book. His book and his sister could not have it. “The Power of Believing in Yourself” is now the first book my son grabs when he wants to read a story. Never mind that the book is written for grade school level reading or that the story line is complex and nuanced. He loves it.

When I read him this book I am often drawn to thinking about how far we have come in the past century. We have so many tools to heal the body

Dandelion Root Vinegar

Dandy Root Vinegar

Dandelion (aka dandy) vinegar is my favorite vinegar to make.  Dandelion root is a supreme liver tonic.  It acts to alkalize the body and nourish the blood.  When combined with vinegar which has a neutral pH it is a great tonic for the blood as well.  A diet heavy with meat, carbohydrates, sugar, processed foods and fat will create an acidic environment within the body which is a prime environment for inflammation, bacteria and cancer cells to thrive in.  The more alkaline you make your diet the harder it is for disease to thrive in the body.  Regular servings of dandelion vinegar in your diet will promote health on a fundamental level for your body.  Here is a great way to get the benefits from dandelion year round.

Dandy vinegar has been a staple in our pantry for many years.  Recently I realized we were out of my favorite salad treat.

Your body wants to be healthy!

The human body strives for balance at all times. It works tirelessly to create health and well-being. When the body is in balance it will effortlessly reach a healthy body weight and support an energetic lifestyle.

This is the core belief my work is founded on. I have studied with the greatest minds in health and healing through integrative nutrition to develop a program that addresses the core causes of weight loss and lifestyle imbalance. My program, Break Free From Dieting, is built on the premise that your body will reach and maintain a healthy weight with high energy with an understanding of how the body assimilates food and creates health.

As a Health Coach I create a supportive environment that will motivate and enable you to achieve your goals. Instead of creating lists of restrictions and good and bad foods, I coach my clients to create a happy,

Thyme for Congestion

Hearth Shaped Thyme

This winter was a rough one for us in terms of colds. Nothing serious just colds that wouldn’t end. In the midst of my suffering I was scouring my herbal texts for any suggestions I could use to end the congestion that was plaguing me. When I found the recommendation to use a tea made with thyme, I was overjoyed. Thyme is my favorite herb. I’ve been accused of putting it in all of my meals. I categorically deny that accusation.

Finding out the herb I have in abundance in my home is also good for relieving congestion was truly a blessing. Of course I immediately had to try it out for myself. I prepared a cup of tea using a teaspoon of dried thyme from my CSA last summer (I dry herbs all summer so we can have plenty for the winter). I steeped the tea for 5 minutes

The Power of Fermented Foods

I believe when our bodies are in balance they heal naturally. We often hear about ways to strengthen our immune system and the benefits of eating superfoods. I find magazines regularly leave out some of the most beneficial superfoods we have. One such superfood is the category of fermented foods. Adding these foods to your diet will strengthen both the immune system as well as the digestive system, our first defenses against illness.

Fermented foods are nutrient dense but most importantly they contain living probiotics. Our digestive system battles an onslaught of environmental pollutants daily. Probiotics help to rid the body of these pollutants and simultaneously repopulate our digestive system with beneficial bacteria to improve the absorption of vitamins and minerals into the body.

Many of us unknowingly eat fermented foods everyday. Coffee, tea, chocolate, wine, and beer are just a few we are familiar with. The real benefits of fermentation
